In most cases, family members will notice a problem with drugs and alcohol before the person using. The trouble is that it can be hard to bring up drug rehabs in Oklahoma to your loved one, especially if you two aren’t close or are too close. Unless they are under the age of 18, there isn’t much you can do to force them into rehab. They have to make the choice themselves, which they may not be willing to do until things get too out of hand. If you feel that your loved one has all the signs of addiction, here’s some tips to make it a little easier.

What NOT To Do

Before delving into what you can do to help, it’s best to know what not to do. You love your father, mother, sister, brother, husband or whoever is using and want them to get help. However, they won’t listen if you tell them that they will or could die, they’re destroying the family and other pleas. While it may make you feel a little better, it could backfire and cause them to use more.

What TO Do

The best thing you can do is warn them ahead of time that you want to talk seriously about their use of drugs. Then, you two can find a time and place to talk. Family gatherings and public places aren’t the best choices to speak about overcoming substance abuse with your loved one. It’s usually best to use a private home and be alone together.

Compassion is the key here, so you want to be earnest and honest, but also realize what they’re going through and that it’s difficult for them. They are likely to be angry when discussing drug rehabs in Oklahoma and may even claim they don’t need help. It may take a few tries before they’re willing to listen, and then it’s best to make an appointment somewhere as soon as possible before they change their mind.
