Generally speaking, sleep disorders are irregularities in the amount of sleep a person gets or the quality of sleep that is achieved. At a sleep disorder center one will determine if the underlying problem is psychological which causes the sufferer distress. Sleep disorders are persistent and they most certainly interfere with the sufferer’s ability to cope with the pressures and tensions of day to day living in El Paso TX, the disorder has a dramatic effect on both their social life and professional life.

Although there are only two main areas of sleep disorders; parasomnias and dyssomnia, there are approximately 70 types of recognized disorders.

Under the category of parasomnias are nightmare disorders and sleep terror. Nightmare disorders are quite common, especially in children and about 50 percent of the juvenile population is affected to one degree or another. The individual who suffers from this sleep disorder is woken repeatedly from a deep sleep into a state of full awareness. As this sufferer usually remembers the nightmare, he or she is reluctant to attempt going back to sleep out of fear of a recurrence. This is well documented and understood by a sleep disorder center to be caused by stress.

In many cases those who suffer from sleep terror wake up shaking and crying uncontrollably and when they are rudely awoken they are disoriented and confused. This individual often does not remember the dream and is more than likely going to immediately fall back asleep. Once this individual awakens, there are usually no memories of the dream.

Another parasomniac condition is sleep walking, while doing this the individual can move around freely, perhaps even eating, using the bathroom or even carrying on a conversation with others. If a person who is walking in their sleep is suddenly awaken they will be disoriented and have no idea of what they did or why. Many children sleepwalk, this behavior, if it is to manifest itself normally shows up when the child is between seven and 12 years of age, it is rare for adults to sleepwalk unless they did this when they were children.

More common disorders are those associated with Dyssomania, these include insomnia which affects about 35 percent of the adult population of the US. Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or to remain sleeping. It is believed that anxiety and frustration over not being able to sleep are the leading causes of insomnia.
