Have you been accepted on a course to study MBBS in America? If so, before you face several years of rigorous but rewarding medical studies, you have to confront the first challenge — what to pack! Here are some helpful tips to make sure you don’t leave anything important behind.
To Over-pack or Under-pack?
It’s quite hard to get the balance right, and people usually either over-pack or under-pack. Between the two, you should lean towards over packing — but any more than two suitcases and one carry-on will be difficult to transport without assistance. It’s a hassle to carry extra luggage on a long-distance flight. However, to study MBBS in America, you’ll be there for several years so that extra effort will repay itself.
Electrical Items
The USA operates on a 120 V, 60 HZ system — check whether the appliances you intend to bring are compatible with this (India, for example, is 230 V and 50 Hz). You may need to purchase an additional transformer or adapter to use your appliances without damaging them — if you are not sure, contact the manufacturer.
Clothing
As a general rule, a buffer of 2 weeks’ worth of clothing is a good guideline, but if you can fit more in, go for it. Take the climate of your new home into account. Weather varies throughout this huge country, so what you take will depend on where you plan to study MBBS in America. Are you going somewhere that is rainy? Is it hot, dry, cold? Pack accordingly!
Keep Books to a Minimum
Books are very heavy and take up a lot of space in your luggage. Do not bring every book on your bookshelf unless you are absolutely sure that you will need it in your course, and you will not be able to access it easily when you get there (or maybe you want your own copy due to annotations). Buy electronic versions of any books you buy between now and your departure — or perhaps wait until you arrive, because the book might be available in the library, or you might get discounts on academic books.
