General Dentistry complements basic dental care by offering solutions for stained, chipped or crooked teeth. Bright, dazzling smiles are a tremendous confidence booster. Some of the ways in which dentistry can fix those problem teeth are listed below.
- Porcelain veneers consist of thin pieces of porcelain bonded to the surface of the tooth. They are able to correct the appearance of stained teeth that resist whitening, cover small gaps between teeth or hide cracked or broken teeth. Each veneer is custom-sculpted for the patient. This is not considered a reversible procedure, as a tiny amount of the surface of the tooth must be removed to make space for the veneer. Veneers require no special care; they are treated the same as original teeth. Of course, undue stresses (such as chewing ice) should be avoided.
- Porcelain crowns may be the answer when the shape of the original tooth is badly damaged because of decay or injury. The crown is sculpted to replace the outside portion of the tooth to the gum level and can look better than the original tooth. A porcelain crown is not as thin as a veneer. In some cases, this extra thickness is needed. Chronic tooth-grinders may need to use a mouth guard at night to protect the crowns from excessive wear.
- Teeth whitening replaces stained or dark teeth with a healthy, brighter smile. The primary causes of darkened teeth are age, genetics, antibiotics and some foods and beverages. Almost all adults believe that an attractive smile is a tremendous asset to someone’s career and personal life. In-office teeth whitening is extremely effective and results are noticeable after only one treatment. Take-home whitening is part of the complete process.
