A specific pipe is identified by its inner diameter and another non-dimensional number for wall thickness referred to as the Schedule. Inner diameter is called nominal size. For instance, a nominal size 6 PVC pipe Sch. 40 indicates a pipe with a 6-inch inner diameter and of type Schedule 40. But for pipe sizes that are 14″ and larger, the outer diameter indicates the nominal size as opposed to the smaller sizes in which the inner diameter is the nominal diameter.
Types of PVC pipes: The principal types of pipes that are available are categorized into:
* Rigid & Flexible: Available sizes in this category include 1/8″ up to 24″
* Rigid PVC pipe in short sections: The pipe sizes in this category range from 3″ up to a maximum of 7′ 11″.
* Thinwall: The two sizes available in this category are 6 PVC pipes and 8 PVC pipes.
* CPVC CTS Pipe: These pipes are rare and are used mostly for hot water systems. A 6 PVC pipes size is not available in this category
* Other Categories: The other available categories are Clear PVC & Acrylic Pipe, Sch 40 White PVC Plumbing Pipe, Sch 80 Gray PVC Plumbing Pipe, Furniture Grade Glossy White Pipe and PVC CTS CPVC Pipe.
