There are times when a professional technician is required to fix your AC unit. This could be either because something has come loose in the unit itself, the coolant is leaking, or the coils are malfunctioning. None of these are fit for an amateur to handle, but there are certain things you should always be doing for your AC unit to stave off those malfunctions, which every technician recommends. If you are in search of AC service in Fort Pierce FL but want to know how you can extend the lifespan of your AC unit after it’s fixed, here are some minor bits of maintenance you can do along the way.

#1. Filters

This is something that everyone should be doing with their AC units. You need to routinely replace the filters on your AC unit, to make sure that the air inside your home remains clear and clean at all times. It also keeps it from overheating, as all that dust that gathers on the filter can heat up the unit as it overworks itself trying to make up the difference. Dirty filters clog up the system and block normal airflow, making what air can get through dirty and dusty. Luckily, this is an easy problem to fix. You just need to do what the original installer instructed, and replace the filters on a regular basis.

#2. AC coils

An AC unit has two coils: an evaporator coil and a condenser coil. These two coils jobs are to collect dirt over their lifespan, which can be months, or even years, in length. Keeping your filters clean is a good way to extend the evaporator coil’s lifespan, as it will reduce the amount of dust it has to deal with at one time. However, over time, they will collect too much dirt, and when that happens, they must be replaced.

#3. Coil fins

But it isn’t just the coils that need to be looked after, it’s also the coil fins that require your attention. If the aluminum fins on the evaporator and condenser coils get bent for whatever reason, airflow can be blocked through the coil. Luckily, any air conditioning company and wholesaler keep in stock a tool known as a fin comb. These tools are specifically designed to help straighten out bent combs. So if you notice this on your fin combs, it’s highly recommended that you buy one.
