When there is reason to have a cone shape drilled in various materials, countersink drill bits are the tools employed. The objective is to have a cone shape which is deep enough to allow a screw to be flush with the surrounding material. These types of drills are used in almost every industry as well as construction. A popular use in construction is to provide a countersink in drywall so that the screw can be buried under the joint compound.

Countersinks as they are commonly called are available in two options; dedicated countersink and modified countersink. A dedicated version of the product will always create a countersink and the user can determine the specific dimensions of the countersink based on the requirements of the project. The dedicated tool can be used in place of a drill bit when the demand is constant. Although a dedicated countersink is a little more expensive than a regular drill bit, they provide better results.

The modified countersink also is used in a standard drill but as they are customized they are somewhat more expensive than a dedicated bit. Depending on the depth of the countersink, your drill may or may not be compatible due to the depth.

There are three specific dimensions that are important when purchasing countersink drill bits. You must consider the material that you’re working with, the length of the tool and the depth of the countersink. Purchasing the correct tool for the material that is being drilled is very important, most vendors, whether a bricks and mortar store or an online store organize the countersinks according to material and label them as such. Make sure you take the time to review the various bits available and select one which is best suited for the actual material.

The overall length of the drill bit is dependent on the thickness of the material being drilled. The bit must be long enough to drill the hole of the required depth. When you purchase the bit, think about the projects that you normally work on and purchase a drill of sufficient length for future use.

The depth of the countersink is equally important, in some applications the screw head must be below the surface; in other applications it is acceptable to be flush.
