Eureka lemon trees produce the typical lemons seen in the produce departments of grocery stores. However, they are also easy to grow at home in containers or a raised bed so you can enjoy a supply of this tangy citrus fruit all year. Just plant it in full sun and, if you are concerned about the temperature dropping below 20 degrees F., buy a potted dwarf variety that can easily be moved indoors.

The Eureka lemon tree is low maintenance, needing only sunlight, regular watering twice weekly for containers and weekly for outdoor trees, and the application of nitrogen-rich fertilizer three times a year. If you do notice the leaves are yellowing, you might need a leaf spray to treat an iron and zinc deficiency. Pest protection is usually handled by spraying the tree periodically with a strong spray of water.

Well tended trees will produce three- to four-inch-long, oval ripe fruit all year round. Not only are lemons popular use for in beverages, baking and salad dressings, the skin of the fruit is rich in lemon oil with its many cleaning properties. Nothing keeps cut apples and avocados fresh better than a little squirt of lemon juice. The value added is the visual appeal of the tree’s beautiful white, scented blossoms. You will also appreciate the fact that these lemon trees are thornless so are easy to handle.

An interesting variation on the common, yellow, grocery store lemon is the variegated pink Eureka lemon. The leaves are green and white and the outside rind is striped green and yellow. Although the flesh is pink, it is the same familiar citrus fragrance, perfect for cooking.

Eureka lemon trees are hardy, easy to grow and will provide you with enough fresh citrus for all your cooking and baking needs. In addition, they look good in your garden or window sill. Take the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful plant.
