Heat pumps are very popular in many parts of the world and throughout the United States, particularly in the southern states. It is a system that can both heat and cool a space by transferring heat into or out of the interior of the home or building. Heat pumps are often used a supplemental or integrated system with traditional HVAC options in more northern areas of the country.

As this is a system that actually moves the heat rather than using power to heat the air, it is a cost effective option to run, often lowering your electrical bill. Have a heat pump installed and maintained by your HVAC company is a great option in many homes and, with the system design, they are typically not a system that will require a lot of heat pump repairs.

In general, before calling your HVAC service for heat pump repairs, check these following issues. These are all simple solutions that can sometimes be the cause of the problem with the system.

Check the Thermostat

A very simple check before calling for heat pump repairs is to verify the thermostat has not been adjusted too low. Most homes will now use a digital thermostat, so it will be easy to see the set temperature as well as the current temperature in the room.

Sometimes, particularly when the system is set up to be controlled by a remote device like a computer or a smartphone, settings can be easily changed without realizing the change has occurred. If the thermostat doesn’t seem to be operating correctly or the heat pump doesn’t start, check the power.

Power to the Unit

When the fan doesn’t come on and the temperature is set to 4-5 degrees above the room temperature it may be a problem with the breaker. Check to make sure it has not been tripped. If it has, flip the breaker back on. Should the breaker go back off again call your HVAC service and do not keep flipping the breaker as this can be a sign of an electrical problem or damage to the wiring.
