The California lifestyle has always been an active, healthy lifestyle. The southern California sunshine combined with mild temperatures supports many outdoor recreational activities. Large areas of natural beauty, including 245 acres of state beach beckon to Santa Monica residents to come out and play. And play, they do. From surfing and swimming to biking and yoga, there are activities for everyone.
Water Sports
The ocean is a mistress who calls to those who would experience life ‘in the moment’, where nothing else exists but now. Any given day, on the coast of Santa Monica Bay, surfers, wind surfers, kite surfers, paddle boarders, kayakers, and swimmers flock to the water.
The sport of ancient Hawaiian Kings, surfing, exploded in worldwide popularity in the early 1960’s, after the release of ‘Surfin’ by the Beach Boys. Santa Monica is brimming with surf schools that offer lessons for surfing (including wind and kite surfing, and paddle boarding), kids summer camps and group events.
Perfect for exploring the coast and for fishing, ocean kayaks have become a big hit in Santa Monica. Small sailboats, powerboats and wave runners are also quite popular. A number of boat rental businesses can be found in Marina Del Ray, just south of Santa Monica.
Land Based Sports
For those who prefer their feet planted firmly on dry land, there is no shortage of activities. The Marvin Braude Bike Trail is a bicycle path that follows the Pacific shoreline. This twenty-two mile path runs through Santa Monica State Beach. Cyclists are not the only ones on the path, though. Pedestrians, joggers, skateboarders, and rollerbladers enjoy this amenity as well.
Volleyball courts are dotted along the beach for the public. The city of Santa Monica offers a variety of classes for young and old including volleyball, soccer, tennis, general fitness, gymnastics, core strength training and yoga.
For those who wish to leave the water and land behind to experience the thrill of flying, Santa Monica Pier is the place to be. The Trapeze School Of New York operates five schools in the United States. One of those schools is on the Santa Monica Pier. Private and group classes are available for all levels of experience, including beginners.
The outdoor recreational opportunities in Santa Monica are abundant. The California lifestyle, including apartment living (there are many apartments for sale in Santa Monica), encourages participation in outdoor activities. Its neigh impossible to stay inside when outside the temperatures are mild and the sun is always shining.
