When Robert Hills and John McCanna founded the Hills-McCanna Company in Chicago in 1898, they were producing metal castings, valves and pumps for industries that were largely associated with the production and use of steam. Over the years, they expanded their customer base to cover emerging industries like refining, petrochemicals, mass production of pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, etc. In fact any plant that needed to handle liquids or gases (sometimes even powders) in their processes would probably have had at least one item of Hills-Mcanna fluid handling equipment in their plant.

Hills-McCanna’s most popular product line was their range of diaphragm valves (for which they are renowned worldwide). However, they did make other products such as pumps and the Hills McCanna Ball Valve.

Changing Fortunes And Name Changes

Today, Hills-McCanna Company is part of a large, French, acquisitions based group, known as Andronaco S.A.S. and is wholly concentrated on the Hills-McCanna diaphragm valve range. The ball valves are now produced by Flowserve McCANNA-MARPAC. Flowserve is another strategic acquisitions style of company and they specialize in supplying pumps, valves, seals and related services for the world’s industries that handle fluids in their production processes.

Hills McCanna Ball Valves

Basically, a ball valve is exactly what the name implies. In most valves, the valve will be connected to a fluid carrying pipe and the fluid will flow into one side of the valve body. A rotatable ball is housed within the body. In the open position, the fluid can flow around or through the ball and exit to a pipe on the downstream side of the valve. In the closed position, the ball shuts off (or modifies) the fluid flow.

The bulk of any valve is the valve body. This is considered a non-replaceable component part. However, most of the other components that are housed within or around the valve can be repaired, renovated or replaced. It is often said that valve manufacturers make more profit, in the long run, from the sale of, such as, the Hills McCanna Company Ball Valve Parts than they do from selling the original valve.

Since there are a number of different designs used in the production of ball valves, the first step when requiring replacement parts is to identify the valve model, its size and pressure rating. Larger size valves will have this detail shown on a plate attached to the outside of the valve body. Then, you need to know what “trim” you require. Trim covers the chemical compatibility of the component Hills McCanna Ball Valve Parts. This is to ensure that none of them will be attacked by the fluids passing through the valve. This data should also be in the valve manual supplied at the time of purchase – along with identification part numbers.
