Becoming a close protection officer—more commonly know as a bodyguard—is no simple decision. The position is rather demanding, as you’ll be responsible for the protection of clients in potentially high-risk environments, likely as part of a 24-hour team who may be on-call for long shifts at a variety of times and locations.
However, if you’ve decided that being a bodyguard is the best career choice for you, then it’s time to take a closer look at some of the skills you’ll need to have in order to succeed.
1. Excellent Observation and Reaction Skills
You’ll need to have a keen eye for your surroundings, and be able to react quickly when it comes to assessing situations or individuals that may seem unsafe or suspicious.
2. Keeping Calm Under Pressure
You might find yourself in stressful or dangerous situations, and since you’ve been tasked with the full protection of your client, you’ll have to stay calm to carry out your job.
3. Honouring Confidentiality
If your client is a celebrity or other person in the public eye, you’ll need to uphold their confidentiality and keep details of their personal lives a secret, despite pressure and bribes from press and paparazzi.
4. Ability to Drive
It’s likely that you’ll have to drive your client around at some point. Having a license and a good driving record is key.
5. Training with a Firearm
Some situations or clients may call for you to be armed. Previous training with the use of firearms is an excellent skill to have.
6. Physical Fitness
As a bodyguard, you will likely be put into strenuous or demanding situations, whether it’s holding off a wall of fans or running after someone who threatens your client. Since you can’t predict what will happen, you’ll want to make sure you’re in physical shape to handle unexpected situations.
7. Good with Technology
Basic computer skills and knowledge of other “smart” devices may come in handy when you least expect it.
8. The Right Training
Obviously, you’ll need to take a close protection course in order to apply for your SIA license and become a bodyguard. It’s important to choose a reputable company in order to get the best training possible.
You may also choose a specialisation when it comes to the type of bodyguard career you choose. But no matter what your wind up doing, the above qualities are helpful prerequisites to a successful career.
