Here are 5 points to think about when seeking treatment for opiate addiction:
Inpatient vs Outpatient? Do you want to go into a facility where you spend the night, or are you interested in outpatient treatment? Most folks prefer outpatient, because then they can continue to work and support their family.
Out of town or near by/local? Do you want to completely get away from the situation and maybe go somewhere out of town for treatment? If so, don’t you think there still needs to be plans for when you return home?
Medication assisted or “Cold Turkey?” Many folks say that going cold turkey is very difficult and they just can’t do it. For some, it may be ok. Others say, that being able to take a medication like Suboxone is a lifesaver.
Cost of the treatment? Can I afford it? How much is it? Inpatient treatment is often ten times more than outpatient treatment, but may be covered by insurance.
What happens if I don’t get treatment? One can die from an overdose, so that is a possibility, right? People with drug problems can end up incarcerated. Or, people with drug and alcohol problems lose their jobs and their families.
The best thing to do is to first make the decision to get off drugs, and then decide the best way to do that. It is usually much better to tackle this serious problem with the help from others. Keeping the problem from family and friends is often the wrong way to go. Being open and honest throughout the entire process of recovery is best for all involved.
