Whatever the nature of your dental surgery, you will need to take some time to recover. In some cases, the recovery period is short. At other times, it may be a few weeks. To make your recovery from oral surgery easier, make sure to follow these three tips.
Keep your head elevated for the first few days. Make sure your head is higher than the rest of your body. When reclining on the sofa or while in bed, use pillows or other methods to keep your head a little higher. Doing so helps your blood circulation without placing more stress on the oral cavity.
Use ice to help with the swelling. You can go with a traditional ice pack, or even a bag of frozen peas! Apply the compress for fifteen minutes, then remove it for at least the same amount of time. Along with helping to ease the swelling, this can also minimize any soreness or pain you may be feeling.
Choose over-the-counter pain relievers with care. Your oral surgeon will tell you which ones to avoid and which ones are safe for use. Expect to receive instructions about how often you can take them. Remember that you may be able to alternate these options with any prescription pain medication you’ve been prescribed.
With the right care, you can expect to recover from your oral surgery without any complications. Follow the recommendations provided by the surgeon, and you should be healed in a relatively short period of time.
